Papa Kalo (Dual Language Class)

Although Hawaiian values, language and culture permeate the entire school, this Hawaiian based language program goes beyond stories, songs and vocabulary to provide a sound foundation in Hawaiian Language.

The dual language program has been deemed as "highly effective and uniquely innovative" in a recent Hawaii Association of Schools and Colleges Accreditation Report.

The curriculum has been designed to help children succeed in western education as well as surrounding them with rich Hawaiian language experiences, by connecting traditional Hawaiian cultural knowledge to western STEM concepts.

Montessori language materials for use specifically in the Hawaiian language have been created, so that materials will reflect the Hawaiian alphabet and syntax.

Some children in this program come from families with the Hawaiian language at home, but most do not.  Hawaiian Language classes are offered to parents who want to learn and better support their child’s experience.

Primary Program

Primary Environment (Ages 3-5)

Kawaiahaʻo Church School’s primary environment is thoughtfully designed following Montessori principles and methods to nurture each child’s natural curiosity and desire to learn.

Children ages 3 to 5 engage in an academically enriched setting within a well-structured social community. The carefully selected materials support the development of order, concentration, coordination, and independence, laying a foundation for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics).

Each child is valued as an individual, and teachers build close relationships with every student, allowing for a personalized teaching approach that helps each child reach their full potential. With a foundation of respect, honesty, warmth, patience, and understanding, children in this environment establish learning patterns that foster confidence and competence, preparing them to progress to our Kindergarten program.
