The Montessori-Based Philosophy
At Kawaiahaʻo Church School, we believe that every child is born with a natural curiosity and a strong desire to learn. Inspired by the Montessori philosophy and rooted in Christian and Hawaiian cultural values, our hands-on S.T.E.A.M.-based curriculum nurtures the whole child—physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually.
Our carefully prepared and stimulating classroom environments support each child’s individual learning journey. Children are encouraged to explore at their own pace, make independent choices, and grow in a safe, non-competitive setting that honors their unique strengths and interests.
Many of our classrooms follow the multi-age Montessori model, where keiki learn to collaborate, lead, and support one another. In these mixed-age settings, children develop confidence, strong communication skills, and a sense of kuleana (responsibility) as they interact with peers of varying ages and abilities. This environment fosters resilience and self-direction, traits that serve children well beyond their early years.
Research shows that a strong sense of self-esteem is one of the best predictors of future success. Our program emphasizes self-directed, purposeful learning, helping keiki build confidence, develop independence, and approach new challenges with optimism.
As children progress into our Kindergarten program, learning remains highly individualized and developmentally appropriate. Our curriculum continues to emphasize S.T.E.A.M. foundations while integrating Hawaiian culture, Christian values, and a love for learning through both structured and creative experiences.
